Seascapes RTE radio from Wexford with whales

Making a splash in our waters

THE latest annual visitor to Ireland is young, male and loves to bathe in the wintry chill of the Irish sea.
Bachelor humpback whales are returning year after year and sightings of them will become increasingly common, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) said yesterday.
As the second humpback whale in a week was sighted off the Wexford coast, IWDG spokesman Simon Berrow said these regular visitors offered a huge opportunity for the tourist market.

wildlifeextra.com - Spate of Fin whale sightings off Irish Coast

Andrew Malcolm reports from the mine shafts area just east of Bunmahon, at least 6 fin whales, some of whom were so close inshore that on one occasion they could be heard "blowing" within 400m of the shore. None of the others were >1KM out. This is exceptional behaviour for the planet's 2nd largest animal. IWDG member Declan Clarke has been recording almost daily fin whale activity from Bunmahon in recent weeks.

11th January - Humpback Whales Revisited

We made a return visit on January 11th 2011 for more sightings of the Fin Whale and Humpback Whales off Hook Head. This time the whales were spotted by The Rebecca C, members of the IWDG (Irish Whale and Dolphin Group) and Philip Bromwell of RTE. News reports of the sightings will be televised on Januray 12th 2011 (6pm and 9pm). For photos of the event have a look at our website http://www.charterangling.ie/gallery/?level=album&id=11

Humpback Whales - Sunday 9th of January

A group of Whale watchers left a frosty Duncannon harbour early this morning aboard the Rebecca C with skipper Martin Colfer in search of Cetaceans. We travelled Southeast, passing harbour porpoises and seals on route towards the great saltee island where we came upon 3 Fin Whales, the second largest mammal on the planet. The whales were just south of the Island. After observing these stunning whales, we made our way west to just over 5 miles directly south of Hookhead Lighthouse to discover the first Humpback Whale of the year to be recorded inshore in Irish waters. The Humpback graced our presence with several amazing tail flukes into the sunset! The whale was also surrounded by up to 20 Common Dolphins which seemed to be bow riding the whale which was amazing for all onboard the Rebecca C to witness. Photo ID images have been sent to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group for their Humpback catalogue, tail fluke images have confirmed that this Humpback is not 'Hookie' from last year. Martin Colfer can be contacted on 087 2657177 for further information about Whale Watching off the Wexford Coast. There is a gallery of photos available on our website www.charterangling.ie
